Sydney Mariano
Sydney’s life has been shaped by the quiet pull of chamber music – the kind of music that thrives on listening as much as leading. Born into a Filipino-American heritage and first finding her voice as a violinist in Los Angeles, she grew up within a deeply musical world: recording studios and concert halls, orchestral stages and intimate musical conversations. Early performances at places like Walt Disney Concert Hall hinted at a future steeped in violin playing, but it was the shared language and intensity of the string quartet that truly captured her imagination.
Music became not just a craft, but a way of connecting – to history, to people, and to herself. That instinct led her to London, where she deepened her artistry at the Royal Academy of Music and began to shape a life rooted in chamber music. As a founding member of the award-winning Kyan Quartet, Sydney found a home in the collective voice of four musicians from different cultures, united by curiosity and care. The quartet has since built a vibrant international career, performing across Europe and Asia in venues including Wigmore Hall and the Shanghai Opera House, while earning recognition as First Prize winners of the DYNAMIKfest Salzburg Chamber Music Competition and prizewinners of the Royal Over-Seas League Competition in London.
Alongside their performing life, the Kyans are currently studying for a Master’s degree in Chamber Music at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, where they are mentored by leading chamber musicians and continue to refine their artistic voice.
For Sydney, chamber music is not only confined to prestigious stages – it lives equally in schools, care homes, and shared moments of discovery with young musicians. Looking ahead, Sydney dreams of a life devoted to chamber music at its highest level: performing, teaching, commissioning new works, and building spaces where collaboration can flourish. With the generous support of the Wavendon Foundation, she is able to move closer to this vision – investing time, energy, and belief into the future she is working toward. Supported by mentors, colleagues, and the communities she serves, Sydney continues to shape a career grounded in dialogue, generosity, and purpose, guided always by the quiet conviction that music is most powerful when it is shared.
